The year got off to a wonderful start for me. On January 2, I visited Arjan Troost’s Erspelo photo hide with a photography friend. It was the perfect opportunity to properly test my new Canon R6 Mark II together with the EF 400mm f/5.6 and discover whether this lens really suits me.
The day started a little later than planned, as I had taken a wrong turn and could not find the location straight away. In the end, we arrived around ten o’clock, and just enough snow had fallen to create a beautiful winter atmosphere to capture, exactly what we had hoped for instead of the usual gloomy Dutch winter weather.
The wait was rewarded with some wonderful moments in front of the lens. A woodpecker had been on my wish list for quite some time, and I was able to capture it beautifully. The real highlight, however, was a flying chaffinch that appeared perfectly in front of the camera. I also saw my first buzzard, which was simply a joy to experience.
In between taking photos, I got to know my camera better and, above all, enjoyed the peace, the atmosphere, and everything unexpected that happened along the way. For me, it was an incredibly enjoyable and educational day, and it definitely left me wanting more.
